Apple Temple
Installation, 2012. Created shortly after the death of Steve Jobs, Apple Temple is a tongue-in-cheek reflection on memorial, capitalism, and brand loyalty. Apple stores have become postmodern temples of gleaming steel, stone, and glass with a near-religious following and devotion to the brand. It even has its own icon in the image of the pure white glowing Apple. Apple stickers, included with most products, can be found next to Jesus fish bumper stickers on the rear bumpers of SUVs all over America.
The catalyst for this project was finding boxes of (unactivated) Apple gift cards in a dumpster behind a store, likely discarded because the design had been updated. Just like any good religion, Apple constantly updates and reinvents itself to retain its followers and gain new ones, leaving behind a wake of old "relics" such as the five ancient Macintosh Classic PCs featured here.
